Purpose
It is the mission of the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston & Area to enhance the quality of life for children in our community. We are investing in their futures and strive to create positive environments from which these children and youth can grow and reach their full potential. The club works to develop citizenship and leadership skills among all its members. We offer opportunities to learn life-skills and aid in the development of social skills, all while having fun and participating in recreational programs. By exposing our children and youth to enrichment activities we help to broaden their horizons and encourage cooperation.
Philosophy
We share a common vision with other social service agencies in our community. Through partnerships with other affiliated agencies and service providers we are working towards the creation of a healthy and vibrant community in which children and youth are respected and offered services to help meet their needs. A main priority of our membership is to provide vulnerable youth, who may have limited opportunities, a chance to participate in preventative, results oriented programs aimed at empowerment. Sensitivity towards social, economic and cultural variations are inherent in all aspects of our Club’s programming. Respect is a key word for all members, staff and volunteers alike. We have to have respect for ourselves, others and property. It is the basis of the Club’s philosophy.
History
Although there has been roots of the Boys and Girls Club in Canada for over 100 years, the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston & Area was only granted Club status in 1988 and was incorporated by the Boys and Girls Club of Canada in February 1993. The first signs of a permanent facility occurred in February of 1999, when the club arranged to purchase the former Robert Meek Public School. The club presently runs over 20 programs in either the clubhouse or in schools in the community from Monday through Friday.
Mission Statement
To provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.
